U.S. Deliberately Excluded from Democratic Leaders’ Meeting

In a striking diplomatic development, leaders from democratic nations across Europe, including Canada (CBC), gathered today (March 2, 2025) for a high-level meeting to address the escalating tensions in Eastern Europe and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Notably absent from the invitation list was the United States, a decision that underscores the growing rift between the Trump/Vance administration and its traditional allies.

The meeting comes on the heels of a highly controversial and widely criticized incident involving U.S. President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance, who launched an embarrassing and unprovoked verbal attack on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during a recent public event (The Guardian, PocketNews). The attack, widely perceived as an attempt to undermine Zelenskyy’s leadership and rally support for Trump’s isolationist agenda, prompted widespread responses from global leaders (Al Jezeera).

A Defining Exclusion

While the March 2 meeting’s agenda ostensibly focuses on bolstering support for Ukraine and reinforcing democratic alliances, the exclusion of the United States sends a clear message: the Trump/Vance administration’s erratic and combative approach to foreign policy has eroded its standing on the global stage.

European leaders, including those from Germany, France, and the United Kingdom, have emphasized the importance of maintaining a united front in support of Ukraine.

““Russia illegally and unjustifiably invaded Ukraine. For three years now, Ukrainians have fought with courage and resilience. Their fight for democracy, freedom, and sovereignty is a fight that matters to us all,” Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau wrote on “X” (Al Jazeera) (FFS, get off that misinformation machine Trudeau!). Trudeau, not initially invited, is the only attendee from North America to attend. (Kyiv Independent)

Despite the exclusion, there is a thinly veiled acknowledgement of the U.S.’s historical role in global security. References to the “backstop” that only the U.S. can provide—a nod to its military and economic might—suggest that European leaders are not entirely ready to sever ties (Time). However, this meeting marks a significant shift in how the international community views American leadership under the Trump/Vance administration.

A Backfired Strategy

The Trump/Vance administration’s recent public appearance with Zelenskyy was intended to be a moment of triumph—a display of strength and moral clarity designed to rally the world behind their vision of foreign policy (“This is going to be great television,” gloated Trump at the end of the meeting The Guardian). Instead, it backfired spectacularly. The attack on Zelenskyy, a leader who has become a symbol of resilience and democracy, was met with widespread outrage and further alienated the U.S. from its allies.

The administration’s stunning inability to recognize the diplomatic fallout is a symptom of its insularity, with an administration intentionally sealed in by sycophants.

(Related: How Sycophancy Destroys a Nation, by Dr. Gai Chol Paul, DBA: “Sycophancy is one of the major threats to a nation’s progress and development. When leaders are surrounded by sycophants who are more interested in pleasing them than telling them the truth, they become insulated from reality and lose touch with the needs and aspirations of the people they are supposed to serve. This leads to poor decision-making, corruption, and a lack of accountability, which ultimately undermines the nation’s progress and development.”)

Outrage and Isolation

The Trump/Vance administration expected to respond with indignation to this exclusion (again, “This is going to be great television,” gloated Trump at the end of the meeting The Guardian). Accustomed to a world where American leadership was an unquestioned leader in upholding democracy, the current administration is likely to view the March 2 meeting as a direct affront.

The reality is that the administration’s own actions have directly created this moment. Indeed, Trump has established rich-white-guy-as-the-poor-victim as an inherent strategy (The New Yorker).

The exclusion of the U.S. from such a critical meeting is unprecedented in modern diplomacy. It reflects a broader trend of diminishing American influence under the Trump/Vance administration, which has, in these short 40 days, ingrained unilateralism, isolationism, and protectionism over collaboration.

Looking Ahead

As European and Canadian leaders deliberate on the next steps in supporting Ukraine and strengthening democratic alliances, the absence of the U.S. looms large. This meeting may well be remembered as a turning point in global diplomacy—a moment when the world begins to re-calibrate its approach to leadership and cooperation in the face of American isolationism.

For now, the message is clear: the defense of democracy and sovereignty is a shared responsibility, and the international community is prepared to move forward, even if it means doing so without the United States.
