Donald Trump is betting that economic pressure — $3,800 in additional costs per family, a $40 trillion national debt, and a war driving up gas prices [1][9] — will make $5,000 sound like relief rather than what it is: a transactional promise from a man who has stiffed creditors his entire life, whose family is accumulating billions while in office, and whose tariff refunds went to corporations, not to you.

Dear Americans,

Donald Trump has promised you $5,000 [1]. He calls it “the Trump Dividend,” and he made the pledge at the Republican National Committee’s midterm convention in Dallas on September 9 — on the condition that Republicans retain control of both the House and Senate [1].

Before you celebrate, consider the record.

Donald Trump doesn’t pay his debts.

From 1973 to 2016, Trump and his businesses were involved in over 4,000 legal cases [7]. As of early 2024, his court-ordered debts totalled roughly $542 million, including a $355 million civil fraud judgment, $88.3 million owed to E. Jean Carroll, and additional contempt fines [8]. In 2024, Trump was convicted of falsifying business records related to hush-money payments [7]. His businesses were convicted on 17 criminal counts in December 2022 [7].

It’s not the art of the deal. His is the art of the steal. This time will be no different.

The math.

Sending $5,000 to every American adult — roughly 260 million people — would cost more than $1.3 trillion [1]. The national debt surpassed $40 trillion in August [1]. The annual deficit runs near $1.8 trillion [1]. Marc Goldwein, senior policy director at the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, put it plainly: “We don’t have surpluses to give away” [1]. There is no identified revenue source.

And the money the U.S. has returned — like the approximately $100 billion refunded in tariffs to corporate importers after the Supreme Court struck down the program in February [4] — went to the companies not the consumers.

Meanwhile, his family is collecting billions.

According to the CBC, citing Forbes, the Wall Street Journal, and the House Oversight Committee, the Trump family has amassed between $4 billion and $5.1 billion in additional wealth since the 2024 election [2a][2d]. The largest share comes from cryptocurrency ventures, including a meme coin launched days before his inauguration that generated roughly $320 million in four months [2a].

Other examples:

  • The U.S. Air Force agreed to purchase drones from Powerus, a company backed by Trump’s sons [2a].
  • Donald Trump Jr. joined the investment firm 1789 Capital, which invested in Vulcan Elements — a startup that subsequently received a $620 million loan from the Pentagon’s Office of Strategic Capital [2a].
  • A $1.8 billion taxpayer-funded Anti-Weaponization Fund was created through a settlement in which the IRS is “forever barred and precluded” from pursuing tax claims against Trump, his family, and his businesses [2a].

OpenSecrets has tracked $39.8 million in political-committee payments to Trump properties since 2008 [3]. Against billions in family gains, $5,000 per household is pocket change.

And your families are struggling.

According to data released by the Democratic minority staff of the Joint Economic Committee on August 26, American families have had to spend an additional $3,800 or more on everyday essentials since Trump took office [9].

The breakdown:

  • $757 in additional housing costs, $310 more for groceries in his first year alone, with food prices now more than 4 percent higher than when he took office [9].
  • Ground beef has risen to a record high of more than $7 per pound [9].
  • Coffee is nearly $10 per pound [9].
  • Gas prices have soared since the start of the Iran War — costing the average family an additional $604 [9].
  • Electricity costs are up [9].
  • Because Trump and Republicans refused to extend Affordable Care Act tax credits, monthly premiums for ACA plans rose over 50 percent in 2026, and deductibles surged by more than $1,000 on average [9].

Senator Maggie Hassan, the committee’s ranking member, summarized it this way: “Every trip to the grocery store, every tank of gas, and every electricity bill costs families more under President Trump” [9].

Trump has mused about staying beyond two terms.

Speaking to the National Rifle Association in May 2024, Trump asked the crowd: “Are we going to be considered three term or two term?” Someone shouted “three” [6]. The 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution prohibits it. Trump has also said he would not challenge the amendment — but he raised the question publicly, and the discussion has not gone away [6].

That Trump would dangle $5,000 to every American to secure a Republican majority — while openly musing about exceeding constitutional term limits — should send a chill up your spine.

Is the Trump Dividend legal?

Trump has no authority to send money to Americans without congressional approval [1]. Whether the promise itself violates federal law — 18 U.S.C. § 201, which covers bribery of public officials and carries penalties of up to 15 years imprisonment and disqualification from office [5] — is contested. New Mexico attorney John Day argued it would be legal as a campaign promise because payments would go to everyone regardless of how they voted [1]. Critics see a president offering public funds as a condition of electoral support. What is not in dispute: Congress would have to pass it, and Trump has offered no plan for how.

He says he is going to give Americans $5,000 if the Republicans retain the House and Senate. He has lied to you over 30,000 times in his first term alone [10]. He lies chronically [11]. Even if he could, what makes you think he will keep his word this time?

You have more power than Donald Trump wants you to believe.

The midterms are this November 3 [1].

Use it.
